Counterfeit $20 & $100 Bills On the Rise in the Ottawa and the Waterloo Region

Counterfeit bank notes are a growing problem in the Region of Waterloo.

Police often have spotted an increase in circulation of $20 and $100 counterfeit bank notes in previous weeks. The kinds of notes noticed by the police were only paper notes – which are currently being pushed out of circulation.

Police state that the pattern in Ontario that has already seen a few fake bills surface in Ottawa may be just the beginning of the counterfeit circulation.

“Young, inexperienced store clerks seem to be a favoured target, since they have not dealt with cash as much, and are usually less likely to know what to look for when it comes to spotting fakes”.

According to the RCMP nearly 45,000 counterfeit bank notes were passed with the $20 bill amounting for nearly 70% of the total notes.
